Our History

On the surface, RH Amar are importers and distributors of fine foods. Scratch the surface and you’ll discover a family-owned company passionate about everything it does. The company proudly takes its name from our founding father, food and drink pioneer Raoul Amar, who set up the business in 1945.

1945

Raoul Amar borrows £2,000 and sets up in business as a distributor of French foods

1948

Based in High Holborn, RH Amar widens activity to include products from many countries

1955

RH Amar enters the fine food sector by becoming distributor for Crespo olives

1960

Henry Amar joins the family business, becoming Sales Director in 1966

1972

RH Amar relocates from the City of London to Amersham in Buckinghamshire

1983

Raoul Amar dies, and Henry Amar becomes the company's Managing Director

1985

After using third-party warehousing for 40 years, RH Amar opens its first warehouse

1996

RH Amar moves to its present site at Turnpike Way, High Wycombe

2001

Henry’s elder son, Rob, joins the company, taking the business into the third generation

2002

RH Amar launches its first house brand, Cooks&Co

2010

Henry Amar becomes non-executive Chairman, and Rob Amar becomes Managing Director

2011

RH Amar takes on a second warehouse in Turnpike Way to pave the way for future growth

2013

Henry’s younger son, James, extends the family connection by joining the business. Rob also makes the commitment that RH Amar will donate 10% of its profits to charity every year

2020

RH Amar celebrates its 75th anniversary. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the celebrations take place on Zoom

2022

RH Amar launches its Doing Business Better strategy, with the aim of balancing purpose with profit, and being a force for good

2023

In its 10th year of donating 10% of profits to charity, RH Amar reaches the £2m milestone of donations made, with 85+ charities benefitting
